I found this word while exploring forests in games like Pokémon Emerald and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In these worlds, the forest is where the journey truly begins.
森

The Anatomy of a Forest
森 (mori) is a perfect example of how Kanji works. It is literally built from the character for tree: 木 (ki).
- 木 = One tree.
- 林 (hayashi) = A grove (two trees).
- 森 (mori) = A full forest (three trees!).
Mental Image: Visualize three trees standing together. In the Japanese mindset, once you have three, you have “many”—and thus, a forest is born. 🌳🌳🌳
Why it matters in Games
In almost every JRPG, the “Forest” is the first real challenge. It’s a place of mystery, hidden items, and level-grinding. When you see 森 on a signpost or map in a Japanese game, you know you’re leaving the safety of the town.
Side Quest: Write it down
Draw the three trees of 森 in your notebook. Keep them balanced!
